BBC Reports on Landline Price Increases
According to a recent article on the BBC News website, the cost of having a fixed-line telephone is going up significantly, as people spend less time using them.
The article talks about how three of the biggest operators are raising their line rental charges by up to five times the rate of inflation. Experts say consumers are switching to free technology instead, and operators are raising prices to compensate.
BT, the largest UK operator, said the rise was simply a result of their regular annual price review but the latest figures from the regulator, Ofcom, show that consumers spent three billion minutes fewer on their landlines in the year to June 2014, a reduction of 12.7% in one year alone. It is possible this trend could be mirrored in the business world as people often turn to their mobile phones even when sitting in the office as it usually offers easy access to their personal directory and gives then the ability to walk and talk.
Whilst the increase continues in employees wishing to bring their own mobile devices to work, few would want to give out their personal mobile number indiscriminately to business acquaintances. People using a work mobile to receive office bound calls lack the ability to transfer calls to or conference with colleagues and can suffer from multiple voicemail boxes to manage.
