What is Ransomware?

Ransomware is a type of malicious software (malware) designed to encrypt a user’s files or lock them out of their computer system, rendering the data inaccessible. Cybercriminals then demand a ransom, usually in the form of cryptocurrency, in exchange for providing the victim with the decryption key or restoring access to their files.

What are the different types of ransomware?

Ransomware attacks are characterized by encrypting files, rendering them unreadable without a decryption key. Attackers then demand payment in cryptocurrency through a ransom note, often imposing a time limit to create urgency. The notes may include threats of data loss or exposure. Delivery methods involve malicious emails, infected websites, or exploiting vulnerabilities. Ransomware has evolved with advanced techniques and models like Ransomware-as-a-Service. Prevention measures include regular data backups, software updates, antivirus tools, cautious online behavior, network security, and user education. A robust cybersecurity strategy, including training, is crucial to mitigate ransomware impact and safeguard against data loss.
